Achieving diversity in the IT workforce to grow the digital economy – how women AND men can make a difference

How far have we come in tackling the number of women working in UK IT?

“Now that list has a very healthy number of women on it each year and really helps to highlight the role women play in IT in the UK.”

Dame Wendy Hall
The most influential women in UK IT 2014

The truth is that there is no quick fix to the shortage of women working within the technology sector. The issue needs to be tackled at a grassroots level, starting with changing the perspective that IT is a man's world. The fact that men dominate the IT industry means that they actually play an important role in getting more women working in IT.

In recent times, the numbers are improving, slowly but surely, yet we are a long way off making the industry more diverse and reflective of today's modern society.

Over half of UK women working in IT believe females do not occupy enough senior positions in their company, a recent report has found. The technology industry is facing a skills crisis, and both male and female IT professionals are in a prime position to encourage more people of all ages and both sexes into the sector.

In Computer Weekly’s forth annual event for women in IT, we hear from women and men who are making a difference to the digital economy and how they have been successful in recruiting skills from a more diverse base onto their teams so far.

Ladies – why not bring a male colleague along with you too, who knows what they might learn…
